Death

If someone in your family dies, you need to report this to the authority. If you wish, the authority will call a funeral service provider. The funeral service provider will transport the body to the cemetery or abroad.

Reporting a Death

If someone in your family dies, a doctor needs to prepare a death certificate. You must then report the death to the registry office of Canton Basel-Stadt.

If the person dies in hospital, a retirement home or nursing home:

  • The management of the hospital or home must report the death to the registry office.

If the person dies elsewhere:

  • As the relative, you must report the death to the registry office of Canton Basel-Stadt.

Everyone who lives in Canton Basel-Stadt receives a free burial or urn burial.

Repatriation abroad

Perhaps someone in your family has died in Canton Basel-Stadt. But you wish for this person to be buried abroad. In this case, an approved funeral service provider must prepare a record. The record is called a "coffin laying and sealing record". You need to present the original record to the funeral office of Canton Basel-Stadt. The funeral office will then issue a mortal remains certificate. Only with these documents may the funeral service provider transport the body to a cemetery abroad. As the relative, you are required to pay the costs.
